If you agree that these atrocities should not happen on our watch, but do not know the facts about what goes on when the news is focusing on celebrities, please read this book. A concerned global citizen took the time to report on the events that transpire in Darfur every day. There is also a documentary of the same name. Read and decide how to act. Let's hope that this book will be defunct soon because Darfur is no longer in turmoil.

Detailed eye witness account of the Muslim genocidal attacks in the Sudan.

The book was recommended as a primer on the Sudanese conflict by a trusted friend. It is an emotional account of an observers perspective as others have suggested. The deeper political underpinnings and history are not seemingly here. It is a bit of a "personal trauma tale" that gives a compelling first person experiential account of the time spent in Sudan. As others have suggested, and I would agree, The tragedy and genocide in Sudan is very real and horrific but after reading this book, I didnt feel I understood all of the down-range actors and combatants. Certainly a first-hand account of the aftermath of killing and genocide but stops short of any context and wider understanding. As much a crime scene report of sorts rather than topical discussion. Regional analysis of the causes? No. Historical background of the struggle and history between all of the forces in the region? No. Catharsis for the author? Maybe. In some ways recalls the post-Srebrenica descriptions of Ratko Mladic's genocide in that it describes the crimes against hummanity in vivid detail with pictures-yet leaves the reader asking, Why did they do that?? Storys of violence, genocide and suffering, but in the end, understanding how the region got to this, not in this book. No understanding of the motivations, non-region foreign involvement, etc. Depending on your interest in the topic, other sources may be a better primary source.

Worthwhile, but ultimately the reader feels the same frustration as the author: What good is this doing? Why can't I really help?

Wasn't what I expected. Very drawn out.

This is an eyewitness account of the genocide in Darfur. In 2004, former marine, Brian Steidle, signed on with the Joint Military Commission (JMC) for a position as a Patrol Leader in the Sudan. The JMC was created to oversee conflict in central Sudan and monitor a ceasefire. His job was to consist of investigating ceasefire violations. Steidle accepted the position with the JMC totally ignorant of the area in which he would be working and its political issues and conflicts. By the time he arrived in the Sudan, a full blown genocide was in progress.Steidle's role was that of reporting what he saw, and what he saw was a Sudanese government that stood idly by as innocent black African civilians, rather than rebel forces, were routinely killed and tortured by Arab civilians known as "Janjaweed" (the devil on horseback) with the seeming blessing of the Sudanese government based in Khartoum and the aid of its government troops. Frustrated by his watchdog role, Steidle carefully documented all that he saw in order to bear witness to this large scale genocide that was taking place and alert the world to it, as he was stationed where journalists were nowhere to be found. His is a compelling birds-eye view of a regional conflict that degenerated into a full scale genocide of its native people. The shortcoming of the book is the author's ignorance of the area and its historical and political conflicts. Thus, nothing in the book is grounded into any particular context, causing it to be a somewhat one dimensional account. While the author's outrage is palpable, so is his ignorance. Still, it is a harrowing account of the suffering of the Sudan's black citizens and an indictment of the Sudanese government and the international community.

After four years as a captain in the Marines, in September 2004 Brian Steidle moved to Darfur, in western Sudan, where he joined an international team from the African Union to monitor the unfolding tragedy "where Arab Muslims kill African Muslims because the Africans are 'too black.'" Their team was unarmed and officially impartial to all sides; their duty was to "observe, inquire, and write reports," although by the end of his stint Steidle realized that of the 80 reports his team wrote only four reached the American Embassy by normal channels. When he left six months later he had assembled a comprehensive documentation of the Darfur genocide, including a photo archive of 3,000 pictures (twenty of which are included in the book), an audio journal he made on an MP3 player, personal notes, emails, and intelligence collected from some 30 NGOs. Steidle's book is his eyewitness account of the horrors he documented on a daily basis-- children who had been shackled together, raped, and then burned alive; gang rape of women and girls of all ages; grotesque dismemberment of victims; the total burning of dozens of villages; the bull-dozing of camps for internally displaced victims; starvation; mass graves; jets and helicopter gunships slaughtering civilians; and endless cases of pillage and plunder. "Welcome to hell," one of his colleagues said when he first arrived. Estimates vary, but about 300-500,000 black African Muslims have been killed by the Sudan government (both army and police) and the janjaweed militia (literally "devil on a horse") that they have funded, trained (complete with graduation exercises), armed, and closely collaborated with in attacks. Another 2-3 million have been internally displaced. One of the most chilling pieces of evidence in his book, if anyone needed more evidence, is a government document specifying the steps they were taking to execute an official policy of ethnic cleansing. Most disheartening of all, Steidle understood that the Sudanese government knew that it could continue the genocide unabated because the international community would do nothing at all. Violence has spilled over into neighboring Chad and also threatened NGO and humanitarian workers. In addition to his book, Steidle has made a film that was released in the summer of 2007 (see [...]

#26,601 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I've been a huge fan of Lisa Eldridge for several years, and eagerly pre-ordered this book when it was first available for pre-order several months ago. When Eldridge first revealed more details about the book, I had initially been disappointed that this was going to be more of an overview of makeup throughout history rather than a how-to book, but the more I read about it on her blog -- and now that I have it in my hands -- the happier I am with it. If you love makeup and are interested in how we have used it throughout history to define and create our personae, you'll really love this book. This is a big, colorful book -- one full of glossy images and lots of eye candy. Eldridge not only looks at how we have used makeup throughout history to add glamour into our lives, but she also takes a look at the appeal of icons like Twiggy and of certain colors, like red, white, and black. The book is really well-researched, and Eldridge teases out all the interesting bits about makeup, like how it was made in ancient times and why we have always seemed to be intrigued by using it to empower ourselves. As a history devotee, I loved reading all of this information, and both the inclusion of historical photos and the retro photos added a special dimension to this book.If you're looking for how-to books, I'd recommend Making Faces and Sonia Kashuk Real Beauty (which is out of print, but which is worth tracking down since it has so much great information in it, much better than the information in the two Bobbi Brown books I have).Although makeup can be used to hide features we'd rather keep hidden, Eldridge emphasizes that it's makeup's ability to allow us to tap into our creativity and sense of play that has continued to make us obsess about it for so many hundreds of years. Eldridge captures that spirit of fun throughout this book, and I highly recommend it.

I pre-ordered this fabulous book and it was waiting for me when I got home. Luckily today was a take-out kind of day, so I snuggled up, chowed down and feasted my eyes upon the fabulous facts of makeup. I love that this book is by no means a how-to, which is refreshing since so many makeup artists turn authors seem to directly fall directly into that category. As a subscriber of Lisa's on Youtube, I have been blown away by her real passion for makeup, not just in its application, but also in it's creation. She is one of those rare people that has mastered what she does and loves what she does. This passion shines through in her book.Lisa takes you through some of the most fascinating periods of history and shows you just how integral makeup was, whether it as approved of at the time, or not, and it's amazing impact on the sociopolitical climate of the times. Now, if that's too historical for you, don't fret. This never feels like a history lesson. Every page has large beautiful prints of vintage makeup cases and advertisements, queens and courtesans, scans of paintings and sketches, all geared toward the world of cosmetics and its fascinating ride through the ages. I read it cover to cover, then went back and read it again. Every paragraph and every page there is a plethora of enthralling facts and histories for your mind to learn. Even better is she doesn't beat around the bush with women's struggles in society and how makeup played a large part in their freedom or lack thereof. As a side note, I was blown away to learn that the argument men make against makeup wearing because it "lies" to them and makes women "deceptive" is an argument that dates back to Ancient Greek and Roman times. (Prepare to see Socrates in a whole new light.)There aren't enough words to describe the level this book is on. This is a fascinating read for beauty guru, anthropologist and historian alike. Lisa Eldridge reaches across the great divide and pulls everyone in with this accomplished and masterful work. Turning the tides against people who view makeup and fashion as shallow and vapid and showing them just how rich and wonderful the cosmetic side of the world really is.Thank you, Lisa. I can't wait to see what you do next!

I'm using this book for an elective for an independent study class that I'm calling the History of Makeup, and I'm loving it. It's a good book and very interesting, even for someone like me who doesn't wear a stitch of makeup unless I am compelled to by some force of societal pressure (like a wedding, or night out with friends, etc). It's divided into sections: black, white, red, and then the business side of the industry. The history of makeup is really fascinating, even if much of it is probably conjecture. The pictures provided are very vivid and varied (from Queen Elizabeth to some more modern "glamour shots," but they all serve the purpose of having a connection with the section the pictures are found in. The kids who are reading the book with me, and answering the questions I have created, are finding the information interesting too, and that says something right there. Finding a BOOK kids don't want to throw in the trash, and actually want to read, shows how relevant the context is to them and that it's not boring. I'm thrilled with it, intrigued by it, and it makes me want to learn more about the history of makeup. I am, however, a huge history nerd, so take my recommendation of this book with that grain of salt.
