This is the best bathroom reading book I've ever found. Even after a tech heavy high school career and 4 years of CS in college, no one thought I needed to know physical heuristics to NP algorithms or 10 lines of code needed to display a fractal, etc.Really love this book, highly recommended. Some essays are easy and can be casually cruised through in 5 minutes, others are very tech heavy and you'll need external research books to be able to get through the barely explained equations (esp. Art of Computer Programming), but they are all very interesting to learn about.

What you get out of the book depends upon how much you want to put into in. A reader of this book, could decide to just understand the general ideas, follow the detailed mathematics, or perhaps program on a computer (for example sorting routines, hashing and the like). Each of the excursions is well covered, sometimes witty, but at times I got bogged-down in the symbols. The chapter on "analog computation" coming in the middle of a book was a welcome relief presenting ideas of sorting, shortest path and minimum trees using spaghetti and strings without mathematics (and would be a good chapter to give to non-computer science friends if they ever make the mistake of asking you what sort of problems you think about). The chapter on neural networks, I thought was also clear. There are also some of the classic computer science problems presented such as the Tower of Hanoi, or "A man ponders how to ferry a wolf, a goat, and a cabbage across of river".The 66 excursions cover a lot of ground, but often return to Turing machines, finite-state machines, and NP-completeness problems. I might have enjoyed more on algorithm analysis, computer languages, and game analysis. Additionally there are new topics since this 1992 publication, such as quantum computing, Bioinformatics, Internet related topics on virus and encrypting, and a raft of social questions including privacy. I hope the "Turing omnibus" refuels for another update.

If, as according to A. K. Dewdney, "W. Rouse Bell (was) the great English writer on mathematical recreations" thenDewdney is the greatest Canadian writer.Period.

If you are interested in Computer Science, reading this book is like watching a "Best Of" from your favorite TV show. It has a a 3-5 page headline on 66 different topics (with references, a must-have for academics) written so that anyone can understand the general idea without any background in the area being described.

Excellent book. Covers math and computer science concepts in a practical and fun way.

An excellent book by a man who knows his subject.

There are some interesting tidbits here, but you have to wade through a lot to get to them. Also, it is obvious the book is just a bunch of articles pasted together, and there is not rhyme nor reason as to their order. I found some interesting algorithms, but the writing itself and explanations are bland and at times quite confusing to me who has worked as a software developer in the IT industry for 20 years. Many of these also feel outdated. If it were cleaned up, updated and explanations made more clear then the book might be worth the money, until then, try Code by Charles Petzold, you'll get a lot more from that book.

This book has a lot of promise, and the premise is a good one: providing capsule overviews of 66 different areas of Computer Science. Unfortunately the delivery ends up disappointing.I was hoping for short, but complete, overview of a number of topics. Something I could share with my teenagers to try and spark an interest in computer science (given that when I was their age to use a computer you had no choice but to dive in and understand how the machine worked, so it was a giant puzzle which begged to be solved). However, to keep the subject count high and the page count within reason, it feels like some necessary detail was left out, making it much harder to fully grasp or appreciate the content of each chapter.For example, Chapter 3 (Systems of Logic) starts off easily enough but quickly jumps off to complete bases, relying on the reader to fill in gaps that they may be unable to do without having more information available. Figure 3.1, "Structure of the complete bases" would benefit from more exposition. Certainly my 14 year old had trouble making sense of the diagram.In rereading the author's introduction, it is clear that he does not intend this book to stand on its own. I feel, however, that it would be more useful for autodidacts to pull ten or so of the excursions and add more sites to the remainder.

I really do enjoy all of the Brad Thor books tHat I have read and highly recommend them to anyone wanting to read a good international intrigue type of book. His plots are terrific. I was a little disappointed that Scot's girl friend got murdered at the new of the story as I really thought that he had, at last, found someone who could live with lifestyle...I do hope that he is able to recover in future books and that he is able to settle down and retire to a moe normal life eventually. Keep writing, Brad! A merry Xmas to all who read this.

TAKEDOWN by Brad Thor is 5th in the Scot Harvath series. Harvath is a covert counter terrorism operative assigned to an international investigative unit of the Department of Homeland Security. As part of a two-prong operation, Harvath abducts an Algerian bomb maker from across the Canadian border while another team snatches the most sophisticated maker of mass destruction weapons in the terrorist world, Mohammed bin Mohammed (A.K.A. M&M) from Somalia. These bad dudes are covertly hidden in New York City. Led by an Islamic assault rescue team, the terrorists hit New York City with a vengeance and inflict far more destruction upon it than it suffered during 9/11. President Rutledge’s teenage daughter is among the seriously injured while many thousands are killed. The city’s infrastructure, their bridges and tunnels are seriously damaged, first providers are drastically hampered in their rescue efforts, and communication resources are rendered almost unusable. President Rutledge speaks to the nation following the tragedy. He tells the country that, “We will no longer hide behind political correctness labels and we will defeat the scourge of radical Islamic fanaticism wherever it exists.” Too bad our leadership can’t take the same tact. If it’s one-after-another explosions, killings, fires and chase scenes you want, Thor has provided for you in spades. I am a big Brad Thor fan, but I felt the destruction narrative was a bit over-the-top and unrealistic. The plot was misdirected and confusing as a result. This is my ninth Brad Thor read and although I am not that high on Takedown, I believe now that the great Vince Flynn is gone, Thor and Baldacci occupy top billing when it comes to well-researched terrorist narrations. They do their homework and write their thrillers in such a way that the reader cannot lay them aside. I give Takedown a rating of 4-stars.

I won't get too much into the plot - reminiscent of any book in the genre I've read. Good looking spy is aided by a hot female to thwart terrorists.I'd say Thor's actual writing style noticeably improves in this book or the prior one in the series.The first book or 2 his writing is clumsy to the point of being irritating at times. The stories have all been good, though they seem to be have improved to a lesser extent as well.At this point I am most of the way through the next book in the series and have enjoyed them all and plan to catch up and continue the series.

This book is heavy duty action. You get to the point where you cannot put the book down. I have favorite characters in other series books, but Scot Harvath is now number one. I am ready for Book #6 and a housekeeper, the dust is getting deep. I highly recommend this book.

I love Brad Thor's work for a quick read. I have the whole collection of the Scott Harvath Universe. Very entertaining and adventurous. The spy-thriller is one of my favorite genres in literature. I'm also a huge Clancy fan and while the genres are similar the writing styles are different. Clancy goes into great detail on almost everything while Thor skips over a lot of the nuts and bolts. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, it just depends on reader preference.If you're into a quick read and want to be highly entertained Brad Thor is for you.

What happens in the Scot Harvath novels could be taken from today's headlines. These fast-paced, even frightening novels transport us into the world of counter-terrorism. The terrorists are horrifying, but the bureaucratic restraints put on those tasked with fighting them are even more horrifying, because they shackle our ability to defend ourselves from the terrorists. The terrorists do not play by the rules, but somehow our people must. The author laid out the plot from the point of view of both Scot Harvath, those around him, the terrorists, the President and those around him. We are brought into closer focus with the Troll, and realize that even seemingly (and actually) bad guys can be of tremendous use. The final plot twist was surprising, because evidence as to who was behind the string of events was laid as bread crumbs pointing to someone else entirely. Overall, a thoroughly engaging book that made me eager to (and did) buy the next book in the series. It also made me more and more convinced that our politicians are leading us down a path they either know not will lead or are sympathetic toward our eventual destruction.

This story had a boatload of potential and I believe it could have been better. I only wish Scot Harvath had more scenes earlier in the book. Brad's writing is so good it's hard not to rate it higher. But in all honesty, the emotional resonance was lower in this one compared with the other books. Not completely absent, just lower.

I’ve just begun reading Brad Thor’s novels. I looked forward to this one as I felt the author made a nice transition with the main character. This one disappoints. The main character, Scott Harvath, disappears for quite a bit to suddenly reappear and then disappear again. The action with a 911 scenario is unrealistic. I will continue the series but not with the positive expectations I had before this piece.
